Lagoon Cottage

Lagoon Cottage is located in the historic hamlet of Churchhaven, a small fishing village on the shores of the Langebaan Lagoon near Cape Town. Kritzinger Architects were appointed to transform an old cottage which occupied the site for many years. The transformation was limited to 140m2 and had to comply with stringent design guidelines given the site's historic context. Key feature walls of the existing cottage were retained and stripped of plaster to reveal the old brickwork which was bagged and painted. Internal living was re-imagined and the existing roof was removed and replaced with a new pitched corrugated iron roof in keeping with the local vernacular. A new corrugated iron building was constructed as a guest suite accessed from an internal courtyard. The closely spaced larch rafters and OSB (oriented strand board) ceiling provide a continuous span over the living area which opens out onto a large lagoon-facing terrace. The project featured on the cover of Elle Decoration France, July/August 2020.
