Imperial College, London (Foster & Partners)

The biomedical science building is renowned for its cutting edge research facilities and the way in which research and social interaction happens in an unprecedented manner. The single aspect site resulted in a large stepped atrium being created, around which social nodes and flexible research facilities combine to form the hub of the building. The stepped atrium and roof light allows north light to filter deep into the space and the large glazed facade provides uninterrupted views over the Queen’s Lawn. The Alexander Fleming Building won the 1999 R&D Laboratory of the Year Award and RIBA Regional Architecture Award.
