British Museum (Foster & Partners)

The Great Court at the British Museum is the largest public space in Europe. The brief called for the restoration and revitalisation of the courtyard located at the centre of the British Museum. The signature glazed canopy is an engineering masterpiece and is designed to span between the drum of the Reading Room and the courtyard facades, maximising daylight and transforming the space into one of London’s grandest spaces. A dramatic staircase encircles the Reading Room at the heart of the building, leading to restaurants and exhibition spaces above. The project won the prestigious RIBAAward and Civic Trust Award.
