The Coot Club

Kritzinger Architects have been appointed to design a retreat on a 464Ha private nature reserve set on the banks of the Klein Rivier Lagoon near Stanford in the Western Cape. Inspiration for the architecture is derived from the corrugated iron boat sheds found in the area, with particular reference to scale, form and the simplicity of materials. The retreat will comprise of five lagoon facing accommodation units and a communal clubhouse set out along the waters edge. The accommodation units will be engineered as  light weight timber frame structures clad in Victorian profile corrugated iron. The 'five finger' footprint allows the scale of the building to be broken down into individual units, reminiscent of a 'collection of small boat houses' rather than one large monolithic structure. The broken building form allows for more more natural light and ventilation opportunities while at the same time encourages the vegetation to grow between the open fingers of the building. Construction is expected to begin early 2021.
