The Coot Club

Kritzinger Architects have been appointed to design a retreat on a 464Ha private nature reserve set on the banks of the Klein Rivier Lagoon near Stanford in the Western Cape. Inspired by Arthur Ransome's book "Coot Club", the project aims to build on the environmentalist theme of the book where one can re-kindle the spirit-of-adventure in all of us by enjoying the simple things in life, and where children can run free and enjoy a back-to-basics lifestyle of sailing, hiking and the general outdoors. The lifestyle retreat will comprise of five accommodation units and a communal club house set along the waters edge. The buildings are designed with flexibility in mind so that each unit can be individually manipulated on site to nestle within the existing vegetation and maximise the view. The design reduces the impact of the building footprint on the ground and encourages vegetation to grow in and around the building. The scale, shape and form of building emulates the cluster of traditional boat houses found along the lagoon in the area.
